Five of Pentacles

The picture

Night snow falls past a gothic chapel. Two figures walk the path in torn cloaks and bare feet. In this house

Five of Pentacles is 69, a 15/6: need, winter, the church light still on. 15/6 is the Devil’s number reduced — bondage of lack, or of pride that will not ask. Need is real. Ask. Give. The door is closer than the snow suggests. 6 is the hearth, 9 is the wider hurt, and they reduce back to 6: belonging. In this painting two cloaked figures walk barefoot past a gothic window of gold and violet glass. Five pentacles burn in the leaded light. Snow is on the stone. Neither of them has turned the corner to the door.

A life with this current knows the cold outside the lit room. Poverty of coin and poverty of welcome are both this weather. Hardship is not a metaphor. Illness, a thin purse, exile from the table — they count. The constructive Five asks, or holds the door. Solidarity in hardship is the beginning of asking. The shadow is pride in suffering, isolation in the snow as a pose.

The Devil’s reduced 15/6 binds people to a story of not enough, or to a story of being too proud to go in. Either chain can be lifted. The window is for going in, not for staring at. Ordinary Tuesday is one concrete help: a call, a meal, a ride, a bill named out loud.

Do not stand in the snow as a proof of character. Do not shine a window at people you will not let through the door. Belonging is the 6. Walk toward it, or make it, while the light is still on.

As a life theme

The outside of the window. Hardship, and the church light you have not walked into. You know want, and you know how close belonging can be. The work is to ask, or to hold the door, without making a religion of the cold. 15/6 is a chain of lack or of pride; you are here to lift it.

Need is real. Ask. Give. The door is closer than the snow suggests. Pride that will not go in is still a chain. Walk toward belonging, or make it, while the light is still on. Do not stand in the snow as a pose.

On the Divine Triangle
