Courage with manners. Influence that does not need a whip.

Major Arcana · VIII · number 8
Tamed force. The lion is not killed. He is met.
Leo · Hebrew Teth · Fire — force that has been tamed
A woman in a pale gown stands in a walled garden at dusk, both hands on a seated lion, closing his mouth without strain. A gold infinity ribbon hangs in the air above her. White roses on the stones.
Strength is Leo as composure. Javane numbers this 8: power, resources, the ethics of force. The old decks put Justice here; this house follows the Waite–Javane line and keeps Strength at 8, because eight is the number that has to handle appetite without becoming it.
The woman does not wrestle. She relates. That is the whole teaching. Courage here is patience with a living animal — rage, desire, a public, a body. The shadow is either the lion running the garden, or the woman who thinks gentleness means no spine.
Courage with manners. Influence that does not need a whip.
Domination, people-pleasing, or a roar that never lands as work.
Meet the heat without performing it. One firm hand. One kind hand.
You came to handle power, resources, and leadership with integrity. A life measured only in status is the shadow of the same number.
An 8 current asks for clean force: money, will, and the body used without crushing the room. Tame, then build.
Javane numbered the deck 1–78 and laid those numbers on the Divine Triangle: Life Lesson, square centers, Major and Minor ages. When 8 appears as a standing number, read it as a life theme. When it appears as a year or a peak age, read the passing current. It is never a second Life Path.
